Both Latin Play and Montuno show strong Latin-American influences. Each piece is presented in three levels of (increasing) difficulty, so as to accompany students in their discovery of the idiosyncratic rhythm and phrasing of this music. Each version is a piece in its own right and the different levels are not to be performed together.
This music is based on oral tradition, and I strongly encourage students to listen to the audio file over and over (while reading the part) before playing. Special attention should be paid to phrasing, articulation and rhythmic placement. Once you’ve mastered the instrumental part, play along with the playback file. Last but not least, play by heart!
Composing these pieces was an exhilarating experience for me and I hope they will provide motivation and fun to the young and young-at-heart clarinet players.
